The Cosmopolitan Baptist Church (CBC) was
organized on April 8, 1950 by Rev. George J. Wildy. Under his leadership the
church began to grow spiritually and numerically. After the death of Pastor Wildy and under the
leadership of Pastor G.J. Houston, the church began and completed an extensive
building program. After the passing of Pastor Houston, Rev. R.C. Hatfield was
elected to pastor our congregation. He served faithfully for ten years,
purchasing more property as the church continued to grow numerically and
spiritually. On March 25, 1990, Rev.
Larry Ashley was called to be our pastor. He is continuing the great work
started by those that preceded him.
In 1977, the G.J. Houston Scholarship, in honor of the late Pastor Houston, was
established to assist in meeting the financial needs of students seeking an
advanced education. To date, CBC has given over $500,000 in scholarships from
the G.J. Houston, Eliza Ashley, Searcy Barnett Sr., Fannie Beckley Clark,
Mildred Hopkins and various other scholastic awards.
CBC uses the holistic approach to ministry. Our ministries include Health and
Human Services, Oakland Community Organization (a community action organization
group), King's Court Children's Church, Wednesday Night Bible Study (which also
provides sermons from our ministerial staff) and Thursday Noon Bible Study
conduced by Rev. Dr. Roy Wilford, Sr.
We are seeking God's timing to break ground for a new edifice. The vision for the campus is to have two
buildings: one that will house our child care center and office space for the
Health and Human Resource Center; and an additional building containing our
sanctuary, classrooms, social hall, commercial kitchen, trustee office and
Pastor's study. "If the LORD
doesn't build the house, the builders are working for nothing (Ps.127:1
NCV).” Pray with us, that we don't move
without God’s guidance.
Join us on Sundays at 9:00am for "One Hour of Power" Sunday
School and 10:15 a.m. for morning worship, where the praises go up and the
blessings come down.
