Scholarship Ministry
Contact: Sis.
Gwen Merryweather
Meeting: 2nd
Tuesday of month, 7:00 p.m.
Mission Statement: Our mission is to provide Christian
guidance and financial assistance to students of Cosmopolitan
Baptist Church so that they may continue pursuing their education
and career goals beyond high school. Our Committee Members
work diligently to raise funds for scholarships and offer career
counseling and resources to the students. Our hope is that by
providing these services, we will enhance the choices and quality of
education available to our youth.
Brief History of the G.J. Houston Scholarship Program:
The G. J. Houston Scholarship Committee of Cosmopolitan Baptist
Church was organized as a memorial to the late Pastor George J.
Houston during the Pastorate of R. C. Hatfield in 1977. The
purpose of the Committee was to put into action a financial
assistance program to benefit deserving youth of Cosmopolitan
Baptist Church with aspirations of continuing their education or job
training after high school graduation. The G.J. Houston
Scholarships are church oriented scholarships, while the remaining
scholarships are family oriented (donated).
In its efforts to help prepare our youth to become positive
contributors to the community, the Committee sponsors several annual
activities - such as college-preparatory workshops, a spring fashion
show and banquet, souvenir booklet and the scholarship awards annual
day. We also have an educational outreach and mentoring
program. Over the past 25 years, we have awarded over $200,000 in
scholarships to our students.
We fervently pray that God will give us the increases needed in
personal service and funds to help our young people to meet the
spiritual and educational challenges of the 21st century.
